Moon mother, moon daughter - FAQs

prettyriverredtent

Where is the Moon Mother, Moon Daughter Program held?

We gather weekly in the Pretty River Red Tent (A Geodesic Dome) in Nottawa nestled on an offset of the Pretty River. Each Mother/Daughter can enjoy their special area, with chairs, blankets, a fireplace and warm tea to come back to each week. There are also washroom facilities available.

Who creates and facilitates the Program?

Nikki Zavitz, founder of Pretty River Red Tent, is a mother of 3 daughters, a Teacher, FAMM Certified Practitioner, Menstrual Cycle, Fertility Awareness and Body Literacy Educator. She has over two decades in education and curriculum development and has been empowering women and girls from pre-puberty to menopause since 2017.

Why ages 9-14?

The average age for Menarche (first bleed) in Canada is around 12. I advocate for early conversations and age-appropriate topics to be introduced and scaffolded upon as girls mature. It’s never too late or too early to start these conversations. The 5 Week PRE-BLOOD Program topics, activities and environment are curated for girls ages 9-14.

What if this is my daughter’s first time talking about puberty or periods? That’s ok and it’s why I’m here! The 5-week Program is a safe, gentle experience for those feeling nervous, reluctant or unsure of where to begin when navigating puberty as a Momma/Daughter pair. It is also a powerful experience to nourish and complement the conversations you may have already started to have about this phase. Your personal experience matters, and paired with my confidence, passion and knowledge of the Menstrual Cycle, Fertility Awareness and Body Literacy will be a potent allyship!

What are the sessions like? What is the style of the Facilitation?

With over 2 decades of experience in education and being a mom of 3 daughters, I have cultivated a space and environment that feels like “home”. The wisdom and education are organically sprinkled throughout rituals, sharing, listening, creative art activities, reflection and mother-daughter bonding time. I have prioritized a safe, welcoming environment (with my famous delicious tea of course), as well as accurate information, and lots of fun and laughter! The sessions are about 1-1.5 hours long and include a topic each week, and no one wants to leave when they are over!

How is the 5-week/session Program different from the Full Day Red Tent? The 5-week Program is a “slower, gentler” pace because we have more time together. It is a great program for those who are reluctant, because relationships and comfort are prioritized, and the girls have a longer time to get to know each other, and warm into the topics. It’s a wonderful way to connect and create community around our cyclical nature. Each session is more detailed, there is a program manual with handouts and we do a creative artistic activity each week. (The Full Day Workshop is a condensed version of this and there is no manual)

Why is it a Mother AND Daughter, and not just for Daughters?

I am a fierce advocate for the mother-daughter relationship, and I believe parents are their children’s strongest influence if we nourish this bond. There are ample programs out there where you drop your child off and are not a part of the experience, and this is often after they have been at school all day (no judgment, I know this is valuable too!)! I provide an opportunity to “just be together”, to create side by side, to get to know each other on a deeper level, and to bond over this powerful thread we have between us - our cycles. I also do not subscribe to the idea that you are all empty vases that I can fill with “information”. I value your wisdom and your experience, and this program supports you to be able to share that with your daughter alongside other mother-daughter pairs. I also know the value of mentorship, and the way modeling confidence when speaking about these topics can be so infectious.

Does the pair have to be Mother and Daughter? Can I bring my niece/stepdaughter/granddaughter? Yes! Pairs do not have to be mother-daughter. It is designed for all “matriarchal”-daughter pairs. Mums and their step-daughters or bonus daughters, aunts and nieces, any valuable female relationship that could be beneficial to a young girl is a go!
